The Southern Ocean Momentum Balance: Evidence for Topographic Effects from Numerical Model Output and Altimeter Data

چکیده

The momentum balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is investigated using both output from a highresolution primitive equation model and sea surface height measurements from the Geosat altimeter. In the Semtner–Chervin general circulation model, run with approximately one-quarter degree resolution and timevarying ECMWF winds, topographic form stress is the dominant process balancing the surface wind forcing. Detailed examination of form stress in the model indicates that it is due to three large topographic obstructions located at Kerguelen Island, Campbell Plateau, and Drake Passage. The difference between wind stress and form stress represents the lateral transfer of momentum into and out of the ACC. It is examined both in zonal coordinates to conform to the model architecture and along mean streamlines in order to reduce the effects of standing eddies. In this particular model, in stream coordinates, biharmonic friction dominates the lateral transfer of momentum. Since biharmonic friction is a parameterization of subgrid-scale transient eddy processes, this indicates that the unresolved transient eddy processes play a critical role in fluxing momentum across the ACC in this model. Although the relative importance of individual terms in the momentum balance does not vary substantially along streamlines, elevated levels of eddy kinetic energy are associated with the three major topographic features. In contrast, altimeter data show elevated energy levels at many more topographic features of intermediate scales, suggesting that smaller topographic effects are better able to communicate with the surface in the real ocean than in the model.

Indian Ocean: Validation of the Miami Isopycnic Coordinate Ocean Model and ENSO events during 1958–1998

[1] In the Indian Ocean, in situ data are sparse both in time and space. Therefore, numerical models are one of the major tools for further understanding of the ocean circulation. We have implemented, validated, and done a 40 year simulation experiment forced by synoptic atmospheric data by using the Miami Isopycnic Coordinate Ocean Model (MICOM) not previously used for the Indian Ocean. The si...

Numerical Study of the Mass Transfer Effects on the Flow and Thermal Fields Structures under the Influence of Natural Convection

In this paper, a numerical study has been carried out for coupled mass, momentum and heat transfer in the field under effects of natural convection. For this purpose, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the terms of the Buoyancy forces (due to temperature gradients), energy conservation and concentration (mass) transfer equations have been simultaneously solved using approp...

Oceanic torques on solid Earth and their effects on Earth rotation

[1] We calculate that the oceanic torque vectors (x, y, z components) acting on the solid Earth using the Parallel Ocean Climate Model (POCM) output data at 3-day intervals for the period 1988–1995. This study examined three distinct types of torque, with different physical mechanisms: pressure, gravitational, and frictional. The pressure torque is further divided into two parts: that due to Ea...

Validation of Wavewatch-III Using the TOPEX/POSEIDON Data

A full-spectral third-generation ocean wind-wave model, Wavewatch-III, has been implemented in the South China Sea (SCS) for investigating the wind wave characteristics. This model was developed at the Ocean Modeling Branch of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The NASA QuickScat data (0.25 resolution) two times daily were used to simulate the wind waves for the whole yea...
